Jay Mingi revealed his determination to show his Pompey potential fuelled his outstanding full Football League debut.

And the midfielder also highlighted the support of Danny Cowley and team-mate Ryan Tunnicliffe in the middle of the park as key factors in his stunning showing against Forest Green Rovers.

Mingi marked his 22nd birthday in the best way possible, as he delivered a man-of-the-showing in the 1-0 success.

The former West Ham and Charlton man ran the show at New Lawn with his forceful running and power breaking up attacks from the home side.

His effort was easily the standout positive as Cowley’s men returned to winning ways after a four-game run without League One success.

Mingi explained he was determined to come out quickly and stamp his authority on the game - and that’s exactly what he did.

He said: ‘I just came out all guns blazing.

‘I just wanted to give it everything I’ve got.

‘Obviously the players around me helped, particularly Tunni in the middle of the park.

‘Having Zak (Swanson) out there making his first league start as well gave me a lift.

‘Every time I step out on the pitch I want to show what I can do.

‘I want to show the gaffer and Nicky and repay their faith in me.

‘Everything went my way. I know there will be times when things don’t always go my way.

‘I won’t stop trying things and on this occasion I can’t complain with how I played.’

It was far from a perfect display from Pompey, as they had the better of the first half before the home side came back into proceedings after the break.

Cowley’s side did get a foothold once again, but had to withstand later pressure before picking up the three points.

That has given Pompey’s belief a shot in the arm going into a week where they have two home fixtures with Oxford coming to town to Tuesday before Steve Cotterill’s Shrewsbury arrive at PO4 next weekend.

Mingi added: ‘The win is good for our confidence and much needed.

‘We are a good team so we have to get points and we have to win games.

‘That was especally the case off the back of Monday, that wasnt us.

‘It wasn’t perfect but we got the result and that’s what matters.

‘We had to dig in and show resilience and we managed to show our qualities.’
