Gaffer: A beautiful setting - but Forest Green was a terrible match-day experience for Portsmouth fans. I don't know how they'll cope with Ipswich, Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday

Gaffer For A Day Ben West, aged 32, from Telegraph Hill, South London, gives his verdict on Pompey’s 1-0 win at Forest Green Rovers...

So how was your first visit to Forest Green Rovers?

It was not a great match-day experience. They didn’t know how to accommodate a large number of fans and it’s mad that a League One club haven’t thought about transport.

We walked the four miles back to the nearest station in Stroud after the game because the bus service was terrible and there were roadworks delaying everything.

We’re pretty young, we can do that, and others also followed suit, but that’s not the point. I’m sure they can cope with 100 fans, but when Pompey, Ipswich, Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday and others bring 1,000, they don’t know what to do.

The ground’s in a beautiful setting, situated in picturesque countryside, but I wasn’t impressed with the facilities overall.

There were not enough toilets, big queues, and the same goes for bars and getting food. Everything was so disjointed.

Okay, but what were your thoughts on that win?

It was three points and, considering recent League One results, it would have been a bad statement had we not managed to get that.

Certainly the performance wasn’t great and it ended up being nervy when it didn’t need to be, with Forest Green shooting across the goal late on and firing a few other chances wide.

A better side would have tested us more and, had they scored, we would have been kicking ourselves for not putting the game to bed.

With more clinical finishing it should have been all over. Dane Scarlett, who did well when he came on, but should have scored with a header, while the ball got stuck under his feet after going around the keeper in another attack.

Man of the match? I’m sure most would be in agreement.

It has to be Jay Mingi. It was his confidence going forward, his dynamism in midfield, the bursts taking the ball past players.

He took charge of the match in the first half, especially, and I hope he plays more, even though it’s important not to expect too much of him at present, despite the positivity.

For me, Mingi was the only highlight of the Charlton game, he was so positive on the ball when he came on, technically so good, and showed that again at Forest Green.

At The Valley, I was sat near his sisters and spoke to them about him, they were clearly delighted with his cameo that day. I’ve a feeling we’re going to be seeing plenty more of him.

And what did you make of the other full Football League debutant – Zak Swanson?

I thought he was good, clearly he’s comfortably playing at right-back, which is something we have lacked in recent matches.

It was time for Connor Ogilvie to return to his left-back spot and you could see he plays better there. I never liked him on the right. Some full-backs can play either side, he isn’t that guy.

With Swanson, he was defensively sound, although understandably his link-up play with Owen Dale could be better, through no fault of his own as they have barely played together.

At times Dale was getting frustrated with Swanson for not giving him the ball enough, but that understanding will come.
