Craig MacGillivray reflected on winning his Pompey starting spot back and insisted: I always believed in myself.

The Scot has re-established himself as the Blues' first-choice keeper following a spell on the sidelines.

Having never previously missed a League One game when available, MacGillivray was surprisingly dropped for Alex Bass at Gillingham on New Year's Day.

He wouldn't make another league appearance for the remainder of last campaign and was also No2 throughout pre-season.

But it was at half-time in Pompey's 2020-21 season curtain-raiser at Stevenage when MacGillivray wrestled back his berth.

The fans' favourite has not relinquished his place since and recorded four clean sheets in 11 matches.

MacGillivray admitted he found it difficult during his time out of the starting XI.

He was never going to give up without a fight, though, and is revelling in regular action once more.

MacGillivray told The News: ‘It is enjoyable being back in the team. You can't beat playing games.

‘It has been frustrating, of course it has, but I have worked hard and kept my head down.

‘When I got my opportunity, I've felt like I've taken it. Now it's up to me to me again to keep my spot.

‘I always believed I could get my spot back. I believe in my ability, know what I'm capable of and I know what my temperament is like.

‘I'm not one to shy away from hard work and put my point across in terms of my training.

‘When I get the opportunity to play, I'd like to think I always give the best I possibly can.

‘I didn't know what the situation was when we came back for pre-season. In my head, it was a good chance for me to give a good account of myself, work hard and give myself the best opportunity I could to get back into the side.

‘Thankfully, for me, I got the chance in the cup and would like to think I grabbed it with both hands and that I'm doing well at the minute.’

MacGillivray's likely to be given a rest in next Tuesday's meeting with West Ham under-21s in the Papa John's Trophy.

There is also a chance that Kenny Jackett could play Alex Bass against Ipswich in the FA Cup first round this weekend, although the Hammers clash is more likely.

Bass has made two appearances this season and had a period on the treatment table with an ankle injury.
