EMERGENCY services were called to the city centre at lunchtime today after a suspicious package was found.

The alarm was raised shortly after midday to reports of what was believed to be a suspicious package, which had been found at the Job Centre Plus building on Arundel Street, Portsmouth.

Nearby stores including Wilkinsons were evacuated and a cordon was put in place as a precaution.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended and the package was soon deemed safe and non-suspicious.
